Dear 8th Grade Parents,

I apologize for not sending out an update last week, and I am sorry this week’s letter is late!

Last week we had a quick visit with Officer Wilburn and Officer Eldridge from California Highway Patrol to talk about Crossing Guard.  Students have been doing a terrific job, and the two officers offered pointers and answered questions that the students had.  I am very proud of the class.  With the staggered start times and longer shifts, they have done wonderful and haven’t complained once!

Picture Day is Wednesday, October 14.  I sent home Picture Day order forms on Friday.  I have extras in the classroom that I can send home if you did not receive one.

We began MAP testing last week.  We are doing it on our devices this year and in the classroom, and so far, it has gone relatively smooth.  Next week we will finish with the Math MAP test.

Progress Reports will be sent home this Friday, October 9.  Please sign and return them by Tuesday, October 13.  I have been encouraging to students to use spare time in class to get caught up on missing assignments/absent work.
There is no school on Monday, October 12.

In Grammar, we will continue to focus on capitalization.  Some assignments will be done on paper as well as the No Red Ink website.  In Spelling, students received their list for the week on Monday and have a worksheet due on Wednesday.  Spelling City accounts are active and they have assignments due on Thursday.  I also give class time on Friday morning for a short study.  Our Vocabulary words were introduced with the Study Sync excerpt from Cujo on Monday.  They will have an activity to complete in library on Thursday and short quiz on Friday.

In Social Studies, we have completed reading Chapter 2 on the 13 Colonies and the events leading up to the Revolutionary War.  Students have an open note test on Friday.  They have been working on their Colonies Project in class.  The completed project is due on Friday.

In Math, we spent Monday reviewing and took the Chapter 1 Test today.  Many students still have to finish the test tomorrow.  Chapter 2 is geometry based and students will first look at congruent angles and triangles.

In Science, we have moved onto to the second scope which focuses on physical and chemical properties.  The class had a hands-on activity on Monday and will have another on Wednesday.

In Language Arts, this week we read a small excerpt from Cujo and focusing on textual evidence.

Students have finished a rough draft of their narrative and completed a peer review on Friday.  I will begin conferencing with them this week as well as giving them the rubric in which they will be graded.

Please do not hesitate to contact me at any time. My email is sloflin@richmondelementary.com or by phone 257-2338 (school number).
