Welcome to First Grade!

WELCOME "FANTASTIC" FIRST GRADERS!

Dear Families,

Welcome to my 1st Grade classroom!   My name is Mrs. Linda Treece and I will be teaching your child this year.  I am very excited to work with all of my students and their families.  It will be a wonderful year full of growth and change.  Thank you for sharing your children with me!  To insure that each child has the most successful year possible, a special commitment is required of all families.  I need to have your full support in attendance, homework, and parent-teacher/home-school communication.

Attendance:  Your child needs to be at school every day.  The daily lessons taught in class build on each other.  When a child misses a day that a major new concept is presented, that child is at a disadvantage.  Please remember, any absence MUST be covered by a note and/or phone call when the child returns to school.

Behavior Management:  In my classroom, I use a Seven Step Management System:  (1) My Outstanding, (2) Great Job, (3) Good Day, (4) Ready to Learn, (5) Stop and Think, (6) Teacher's Choice, and (7) Parent Contact.  EVERY DAY is a NEW DAY for the students.  We always start off POSITIVE.  Students begin each morning with their clips on "Ready to Learn".  Throughout the day, the children have many opportunities to make positive choices and move their clips up to Great Job and Outstanding.  At the end of the day, the students who have their clips on Great Job and Outstanding will receive stickers on their sticker charts.  When a student completely fills their sticker chart, they earn a trip to the Prize Box.  Our classroom rules this year are:  (1) Listen when others are talking, (2) Follow directions, (3) Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself, (4) Work quietly and do not disturb others, (5) Show respect for school and personal property, and (6) Work and play in a safe manner.

Snacks:  I have found that a healthy mid-morning snack is important for your child’s learning.  Therefore, I will be asking families to please send a healthy snack with your child daily.  Snacks will be eaten during 10:15 am recess.

Birthdays:  Children (teachers, too!) enjoy celebrating birthdays.  If you desire to send a treat, please feel free to do so.  Please make arrangements with me prior to the special day.  Thank you!

Homework:  Homework is an important part of school, as it reinforces and emphasizes concepts learned in the classroom.  Please help your child find a quiet time and place to complete their homework assignments.

Homework packets will be sent home on Mondays.  The packet will contain math practice pages and language arts practice pages.  As part of their homework, I ask that each student spend time reading every night and record it on the record sheet attached to the homework packet.  The required time of nightly reading is 15 minutes/night.  The completed homework packet and reading record sheet will be due on Friday mornings.

Communication:  It is very important that there be good communication between home and school.  If at any time you have a question or concern, please feel free to call me at school (257-2338), or write me a note.  I will be happy to talk with you!  I will also indicate on the homework cover sheet any information on upcoming events.  Every Friday, students will bring home a Friday Folder with completed work for you to review and keep.  Please sign, date, and make any comments on the sheet inside the folder.  The students need to return their Friday Folders on Mondays.

Classroom Volunteers:  I am always looking for a helping hand in the classroom.  There are many ways that you can support our class.  Some things can be done at home and some things can be done at school.  If you would like to help with the class this year, please complete the Classroom Helpers form and return it to me as soon as possible.  Let’s work together so that your child will have a great year.  I appreciate your support!

Please complete the Parent Questionnaire and return it to me at your earliest convenience.  This form helps me learn more about your child.  I am looking forward to providing an exciting learning experience for your child this year and working with all of you!

Sincerely,
Mrs. Linda Treece
