 Standards Math 4 and 5

4/5 Math
Teacher: Linda Treece
Time: 8:30 – 9:30 in room 113

Welcome to 4/5 math!
This class will be focusing on the 4th grade key standards but also using materials from 3rd and 5th grade as needed to match each student’s individual needs. The small number of students in this class will allow much differentiation of instruction to allow each student to progress at his or her own pace. The primary resource for instructional materials will be the Houghton Mifflin text in use by all of the lower grade classrooms. However other resources will also be used to provide the best match for these students’ skills in each area.

Homework
One important goal for this class is to build the students’ confidence in their math skills. This will be accomplished by providing many opportunities for success such as giving
students a smaller number of problems to work and by focusing on one skill at a time. Retention of learned skills is also very important for building confidence, so homework
will be given to ensure that students review the materials learned in class. However, to help prevent frustration and keep students on task, the homework will typically be
limited to less than ten problems.

Math Facts
In addition to the homework it is very important that these students regularly practice their math facts at home. We will spend a lot of time solidifying the addition and
subtraction facts as well as beginning to build automaticity with multiplication and division facts. Since these skills are essential for the working out of most mathematical
problems, particularly as students move to the upper grades, it is extremely important that these facts are mastered.
