5th Grade Letter Monday, August 30, 2010 Welcome to Richmond Elementary School for the 2010/2011 year. I hope you had an enjoyable summer and are ready to begin the new school year. Back-To-School Night I am looking forward to meeting you tonight from 6:00 – 7:00P.M. The Book Fair will also be open. I will go over classroom rules and expectations, field trips, goals and projects for the year. Lassen Park field trip A field trip to Lassen Park is tentatively scheduled for September 16, 2010. The field trip is in the process of being coordinated with 5th grade from Johnstonville using a bus. Lava Beds field trip Lava Bed’s field trip is scheduled for October 7 and 8th. I will be looking for drivers. Signs-ups and information will be available at Back-To-School Night. Supply list A supply list has been mailed. I will review what is needed on back-to-school night. Please note a binder larger than 1 ½ inches would be more suitable and dividers with pockets are easier to use than the standard ones. Text book web sites Text books and activities will be available on line in addition to the hardback copies in class. The passwords will be the same as created by Mrs. Heimbigner last year. I am in the process of getting passwords for science. This week There will be math and spelling homework this week. Homework in other subject areas will be completed in class this week; therefore, there will be a slightly heavier load next week. In language, “Earthquake Terror” will be read, an outline prepared of summer time activities, and a campfire story begun (see below). In math chapter 1, lessons 1-4 will be covered and in science, chapter 1, lesson 1 will be read. History lessons 1 and 2 will introduce geography and the first peoples of America. Book Reports/Home reading Students will need to select a book of their choice for home reading. Book reports are due on the first Wednesday of each month. Therefore, the first book report is due Wednesday, October 7th. A list of book report ideas will be sent home with students. Please keep this list. It will be used throughout the year. Work for the Week Please note on the back of the Monday letter, you will find work for the week. This must be signed by a parent and returned by the student the following day. Campfire story Students will work in groups to create a theme for a campfire story. Each student must write one of their own. I will grade each individually but only one per group will be selected to be read at the Lava Beds. |
